North Berwick LNER 1923 - National Railway Museum Cushion

The cushion is produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the seaside resort of North Berwick on the east coast of Scotland. The cushion shows a young woman in a bathing costume, pouring tea from a thermos flask into cups, for herself and two companions, who are shown reclining on the sand. The man has a bag of golf clubs by his side. Artwork by Frank Newbould (1887-1951), who studied at Bradford College of Art and joined the War Office in 1942. He also designed posters for the Orient Line and Belgian Railways.

This railway cushion represents art produced around 1930 by London & North Eastern Railway showing family refreshing in due course of playing golf on the West Links course at North Berwick, East Lothian in Scotland. During the 30s the Flying Scotsman service transported many keen golfers to their holiday destinations and most Scottish golf courses had railway hotels with excellent connections to their local stations.
